About Gatineau

Eco friendly with a car sharing mentality, an amazing public transport system, where all buildings have to be LEED certified, a 3 way collection system for garbage and a dedicated eco center for CRD and hazardous waste, Gatineau takes its responsibility to the environment seriously with a sustainable development plan in action.  Located on the northern bank of the Ottawa River, it is directly across from Ottawa with one of the highest concentrations of high tech businesses in Canada.  Bilingual due to its multicultural population, French is the predominant language spoken.

Wrapping itself in a cloak of green, the stunning natural environment is never far away with easy access to the Gatineau, Outaouais and Lièvre rivers, plus the amazing Gatineau Park.  With over 350 parks and green spaces, plus an incredible pathway system for walking or biking, gives Gatineau the most extensive bike path network in the country.  You will find world-class sporting facilities where numerous national and international events take place.  On a cultural side, about 20 festivals and around 300 shows are put on annually in the city.

The Canadian Museum of History is Gatineau's star attraction and deserves time out to explore.  Your jaw will drop when you see the impressive sight of the world's largest collection of totem poles in one place.  There is a plethora of life-size exhibits of villages and towns in the Canadian History section, so you can get a really good idea of what they were like. If wandering around a museum is not your thing, then head to Gatineau Park for some cross-country skiing, mountain biking, hiking, canoeing, rock climbing and even the twitters can have fun perving on the wonderful birdlife in the area through some binoculars. You can grab some decadent treats in town from cheeses and creamy chocolates to pâtés and head to the hills for some blanket on the ground time (aka picnic) or pack heaps and go camping overnight in the wilderness.

Festivals include the Gatineau Hot Air Balloon Festival, the Canadian Ski Marathon, a motorcycle festival named "MotoFest Canada" and an annual food festival in September "Rendez-vous des saveurs de l'Outaouais".
