About Biddeford

The commercial center of York County, Biddeford includes the resort community of Niddeford Pool, Fortunes Rocks and Granite Point. First visited by Europeans in 1616, it is one of the earliest European settlements in the United States and home to the University of New England. Think of the horrific Helter Skelter Murders in 1969 when Charles Manson and his "family" slaughtered the actress Sharon Tate and others. Biddeford was the birthplace of Linda Kasabian, a member of his "family" and the key witness in the prosecution of Charles Manson.

Originally a village of the Abenaki Indians who fished and hunted in the area, it was first settled in 1616-1617. This is a fact that is ignored in New England lore as it predates the Mayflower landing in Plymouth Massachusetts by about 4 years. Biddeford was incorporated as a city in 1855 having a major textile manufacturing industry at that time. The last textile company, WestPoint Home, closed in 2009.

You can check out 3 of the remaining gun mounts used during World War II at the now Abenakee Golf Club and have a game of golf after the history lesson. Meander around the historic downtown area where you will find the McArthur Public Library and Biddeford's City Theater listed on the National Register of Historic Places. If enamored with history, then you should take a walk around the Main Street Historic District, the Biddeford-Saco Mills Historic District and the Biddeford City Hall.
