About State College

Dominated economically and demographically by the University Park campus of the Pennsylvania State University, State College is a "college town" with all that it implies (aka mega students). Often referred to as "Happy Valley", it sits in Pennsylvania in the United States. Herds of Penn students flock around the town, but during the college breaks the town appears to be dead, although some locals say it is "refreshingly quiet". Despite being a somewhat small town, it is not a cheap place to inhabit with housing being quite pricey. It has a bustling downtown area but within a 15-minute drive in any direction, you will find yourself amidst farmland.

First stop has to be the Penn State's Berkey Creamery where the founders of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream learned how to make their decadent ice cream. The ice cream here is the creamiest you will find anywhere. Once you have dribbled your ice cream everywhere, continue on the gluttonous route to the Original Waffle Shop for another dose of artery clogging fare and to watch the antics of the hung-over local students. You should check out the State Theater, Eisenhower Auditorium or the Bryce Jordan
Center to see what international artist may be appearing, whilst you are in town. It's possible to indulge in some tailgating antics on footie game days or for the more altruistic soul there are 8 state parks nearby to explore however you like. Food is a serious commodity in this town and there are farmer's markets to rub shoulders with the locals year round.

On an annual basis the State College's Art Festival hits the town in a big way with 3 days of Italian street painting, mammoth sand sculptures, live music and sidewalk exhibitions. During the summer months you can indulge in some live music and fabulous food each week at Tussey's WingFest on Tussey Mountain.

If all else fails, go on a pub-crawl with the "natives".
