About Bar

-With its Mediterranean climate, the coastal seaport town of Bar is the major port for Montenegro. Sitting on the shores of the Adriatic Sea, it is home to the largest lake in the Balkans, Lake Skadar. If you peer across the waters you will see Italy. Its old town (4 km from the coast) is awash in cultural and historical monuments, from its turbulent history of being under the thumb of numerous conquerors. A walkable city that is a beehive of activity during the summer months due to its stunning beaches in the Sutomare area, it is home to the world's oldest olive tree (think between 2000 and 2500 years old) and a bustling port crammed with luxurious boats and yachts plus small quaint fishing vessels.

To get to Bar, you can grab a ferry from Bari in Italy, the town that Bar's name is derived from. An ancient city with local archaeological findings dating habitation back to the Neolithic era, the city was the scene of an uprising against Italian occupying forces in 1941. About 2000 Albanians were slaughtered in Bar by Yugoslav Communist Partisans in 1945 and the city was predominantly destroyed during World War II. Bar was rebuilt after this period, but later in 1979 it experienced a devastating earthquake. Don't worry though, as the town has been rebuilt yet again.

There is the "old" Bar and the "new" Bar to meander around. The Old Bar is snuggled under a steep cliff at the feet of Rumija Mountain and is several centuries old. This fortified walled town was a target for the local pirates to gleefully attack and is awash with amazing buildings such as a steam bath from the 17th Century, numerous ornate churches like the remnants of St Nikola Church built in 1288 and the ruins of an aqueduct from the 16th Century. No souls live in the town today, but the middle century "Podgrad" (Undertown) is the place to poke around for its meat market, old inns, shops and cafes.
