Newcastle is 162 km north northeast of Sydney and is the second most populated area in New South Wales.  It is the largest coal-exporting harbor in the world with a famous giant penis (aka the Queens Wharf Tower).  You can climb the 180 steps for the stunning view from the climax.  Here the Hunter Valley is a major wine growing area where numerous wineries will open their doors for you to dabble in a tasting or two.  Newcastle has been the scene of the biggest riot in Australia's history that was immortalized in Cold Chisel's song, "Star Hotel".  It just so happened that Cold Chisel was playing on the last night of the closure of the local's favorite hangout, the Star Hotel.

A loud and vibrant rock music scene, some of Australia's best pub venues where the locals love to hang out, annual arts festivals and home to one of Australia's major footie teams.  

Mad Max, Tomorrow, When the War Began, Young Einstein and even Superman Returns are movies that have all used Newcastle or its surrounds for film sets.
