About Kumasi

Thanks to Kumasi's huge export of bullion gold bars, it remains the commercial and financial capital of Ghana's Ashanti region - where the ever-thriving Ashanti Kingdom is still evident throughout the city.

At the heart of the city is the Kejetia Market, home to a staggering 11,000 stalls with basically every product imaginable. Typically devoid of tourists, this is a great place to wander, meet some locals, and explore the culture - and although it's safe to walk around by yourself, you might want to consider going with a guide, who can help you barter (and avoid getting stuck in a real-life Labyrinth).

In terms of getting around, patience here is key, as traffic congestion is constant throughout the city. Public transit is available through privately owned and public metro bus services. (Taxis offer a more comfortable ride, but of course come at a higher cost.) And keep in mind that Kumasi's railway has been out of service for several years, so expect to get in and out of the city by plane, car, or bus.

Pro tip: Consider a day trip to Lake Bosumtwe, a gorgeous crater lake and one of West Africa's best wildlife parks - it's just an hour away from Kumasi.
