About Johnson City

Most of Johnson City is actually in Washington County and it is ranked as being one of the best small places for business and careers. It is one of the 10 least expensive cities to live in for affordable homes with below average utility, transportation and health care costs in America.

Housing over 20,000 artifacts of Appalachia and the historical past, the Carroll Reece Museum is where you should head if this is where your interests lie. For the adventurous outdoor soul head to the Blue Ridge Mountains where you will find white water rafting, caving and hikes that won't wear you out unless you want them to. A hiker's paradise there is also Grandfather Mountain or Mt MacRae to stretch the legs on one of the trails. For the cavers, you should head to Linville Caverns hidden in mountainous terrain. You can go camping on the banks of the Nolichucky River at the Davey Crockett State Park and do a bit of fishing, or just go for the day and sprawl out on a picnic blanket. If you want to experience real life ghosts of the past, go to the Emerald Village sitting in a spectacular mountain scene where there is a group of gem, mining and historical attractions to gawk at. If you want to chase more history then head to Tipton Haynes Historic Site (aka Tipton-Haynes House) from 1784. There is always the Sugar Mountain Resort to hike in comfort from, if you are a bit on the soft side of a nature lover.

For the ultimate hiking experience you need to follow the Appalachian Trail that flows through the Cherokee National Forest and tackle the highest mountains, some of which are above 6 thousand feet. The ultimate thrill can be had snowboarding at the Beech Mountain Resort or the Wolf Ridge Ski Resort during the winter months.

For those not into outdoor pursuits that may damage the body, head to Heartwood to rub shoulders with some local artisans and shops where you can damage your credit card instead.
