About Muncie

Most Australians believe that the character of Garfield lives next door to them, when in fact the creator of this lovable character, Jim Davis hails from Muncie and the stories are predominantly set in his hometown. The town was originally named Munsee Town derived from the clan of Lenape people, a group of Native Americans, who lived in the area that sits on the White River in the county of Delaware in Indiana about 97km from Indianapolis. Officially shortened to Muncie in 1845, it is home to the Ball State University. In the early days it was merely a trading town and it grew into an agricultural area with the building of the Indianapolis and Bellefontaine Railroad. Abundant natural gas was discovered in 1886 and the region blossomed during the gas boom whilst maintaining its agricultural base and commercial trading center for local farmers.

You will find a thriving boutique craft beer scene and a vibrant musical life. Numerous music festivals such as the Muncie Gras and the Muncie MusicFest are held on an annual basis. The Fine Arts Building is located on the campus of the Ball State University that is also home to the David Owsley Museum of Art for those that like a bit of art eye candy. You will find over 11,000 art works to wrap your mind around and plenty of independent art galleries dotted around town to throw your credit card at. The Minnetrista Cultural Center on the White River exhibits east-central Indiana art and history for the museum buffs and historical homes to tour sit on the campus grounds.

If nothing in town appeals, then put on the hiking boots and trek along the National Recreation Trail that is part of the American Discovery Trail.
