Home to the "Buttplug Gnome" (aka a statue of Santa Claus holding a Christmas tree that resembles a butt plug), Rotterdam has a red light district with a difference; 400 red lights in the ground delineate the area that the Germans bombed in 1940. One of the most multicultural cities in the world with about 160 different nationalities, it has a stunning city skyline. The vibrant city is overflowing with students as it hosts 6 different student associations that are not shy of throwing a frat party or two.

Rotterdam, a major port city of the Netherlands, sits in the province of South Holland within the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt River Delta at the North Sea. With a history dating back to 1270, it slowly grew into a major economic and logistic center. Known for the Erasmus University, its stunning riverside location, brilliant architecture and maritime heritage, it is listed as one of the top 10 cities in the world to visit.

Rotterdam has Europe's largest port that is the 4th biggest in the world. The historical harbor of Delfshaven (17th Century) is where you will find canals and an old worldly Dutch vibe. Head to the Maritime Museum to take a close look at vintage ships and make sure you venture into the Pilgrim Fathers Church to check out where the pilgrims worshiped before sailing off to America. Many of Rotterdam's buildings were destroyed during World War II, but the medieval Great St Lawrence Church is one that survived. The church is well worth looking at for its colored glass windows and 3 Danish organs, as well as the stunning bronze doors named "War and Peace" by Italian artist, Giacomo Manzu. For the art lover who wishes to see paintings from the 14th to the 16th Centuries, as well as later famous artists such as Monet and Gauguin, there is the Museum Boymans-van Beuningen. The gorgeous little village of Kinderdijk is where you will find 19 perfectly preserved 18th Century windmills.

There are so many amazing sights to be found in Rotterdam that it would be a shame to stay out drinking all night in one of the many bars dotted around town overflowing with the young and hearty instead of making the most of your time during the daylight hours.
