About Gijon

A large coastal city in the north of Spain, Gijon is where the old fishermen used to hang out. A big and gutsy city known for its maritime heritage and 16th Century Clock Tower, it has the main loading terminal for Asturian coal. After having a facelift, the town is now decked out in pedestrianized streets, promenade seafront walks, lush parks and cultural attractions. A beach and party hot spot, this is no quaint and inconsequential city. Sitting on the Bay of Biscay about 20km north of Oviedo, Gijon is the capital city of Asturis. With a history dating back to around the 5000BC era it was the object of numerous marauding hordes. It was during the 19th Century that Gijon saw great development and expansion of its port facilities. The city's ancient heart is centered around the Cimadevilla headland where you will find the old fishermen's quarter. A town that has had its economic ups and downs is now home to coworking venues catering to its tech savvy youth who have no wish to leave their home domain.

Spain has a developing startup ecosystem that is being fueled by not just the locals, but by the attractive lifestyle luring tech geeks from all over the world for its relatively cheap cost of living, the general lifestyle of laid-back vibes with tapas infused night revelry. Spain has a wealth of highly educated people who are staying in their own backyards of opportunity. It is home to an impressive number of educational facilities and in just a few years, its youth unemployment rate has dropped from 60% to nearly below 40%.

The talk is not all about playing soccer and there are plenty of opportunities for tech savvy entrepreneurs, as Spanish startups grew 7% in 2017 with signs pointing to a consolidation within the startup community. Its locals are no longer running abroad to pursue their dreams and coworking venues have given them the place to mingle and collaborate with likeminded souls.
