A part of Sekondi-Takoradi, a city comprising the "twin cities" of Sekondi and Takoradi of which Sekondi is the capital, Takoradi's economy is derived mainly from timber, cocoa processing, plywood and shipbuilding, as well as its harbor and more recently crude oil. The city sits on the main railway lines to Kumasi and Accra. As with the rest of Ghana, Takoradi is a great launchpad for startups, especially those looking to enter the other African markets. The opening of coworking spaces has given the locals somewhere to work from, to mingle with likeminded souls and to gain mentorship if needed.

Takoradi is awash in secondary schools such as the Takoradi Technical Institute that houses a fab lab and the Ghana Secondary Technical School with plenty of graduating enthusiastic youth on their way to joining the tech world.
