About Takoradi

A part of Sekondi-Takoradi, a city comprising the "twin cities" of Sekondi and Takoradi of which Sekondi is the capital, Takoradi's economy is derived mainly from timber, cocoa processing, plywood and shipbuilding, as well as its harbor and more recently crude oil. The city sits on the main railway lines to Kumasi and Accra. As with the rest of Ghana, Takoradi is a great launchpad for startups, especially those looking to enter the other African markets. The opening of coworking spaces has given the locals somewhere to work from, to mingle with likeminded souls and to gain mentorship if needed.

Takoradi is awash in secondary schools such as the Takoradi Technical Institute that houses a fab lab and the Ghana Secondary Technical School with plenty of graduating enthusiastic youth on their way to joining the tech world. There is a plethora of computer training centres to encourage familiarity with computers and to acquire computer skills dotted around the city as well. With so much local talent it was a foregone conclusion that coworking venues would appear on its streets to cater to the growing number of innovative minds.

The youth of Takoradi aren't apprehensive about technology, as is the case with many neighboring countries and are all too willing to participate in customer validation and user testing. The startup scene in Ghana has many niche areas that are ripe for tech disruption, such as in the construction and property areas where they can build on one another and create a mini ecosystem. In a country where tech talent is being outstripped by supply, the savvy youth are becoming aspiring developers and entrepreneurs. Coworking venues are now replacing the plethora of Internet cafes as the place to meet, mingle and get work done.
