About Cascavel
In Portuguese, Cascavel means "Rattlesnake" which may be a bit off putting for those with an aversion to these serpents. The biggest city in the West Region of Parana, the city is 491 km from the capital of Curitiba. This is a planned city, so you know it will be easy to navigate and it is a strategic hub of Mercosul. Sitting on a plateau781 meters above sea level, it is near the town of Foz do Iguacu, home to the legendary Iguacu Falls.
The town's landmark is the Cascavel's Lake where the locals hang out including a some wildlife such as monkeys and birds in the wee hours of the mornings with capivaras (huge guinea pig type creatures) snuffling around during the day. The first church ever constructed in the town sits on the lake's shoreline. If you think you need to say a few prayers then head to the cathedral "Our Lady of Aparecida", which is the largest Catholic temple in the city featuring a large cross sculpture and an altar forged with gold. You can find numerous monuments dedicated to the famous resident artist, Dirceu Rosa dotted around the town and the theater lover can catch a show at the Teatro Municipal de Cascavel. There is a museum and Gilberto Mayer's Cultural Center to learn about the local history and the stunning Getulio Vargas Square to traipse around.
The city's heart of Cascavel's Sidewalk is where to head to for some thrashing of the credit card at the shops, sipping espresso in one of the many cafes or indulging in some dining at one of the contemporary restaurants.
