Sitting in the French-speaking region of Walloon, Liege is an old medieval town dressed in brilliant architecture with archaeological treasures and art, where you can still hear an opera in the Opera Royal de Wallonie where they have been staged since 1820.  This is the town to scoff waffles, chocolates and French fries slathered in mayonnaise.  With a history as one of the first places in Europe to begin mining coal, it is an industrial town with a long history in the manufacturing of steel.  Maybe not the prettiest of towns, but it does have a certain charm once you begin exploring.

Take a meander along the banks of the Meuse River to the Pont des Arches Bridge built in the 1800s to replace an older 11th Century bridge, and do the historic architecture walks where you can see the Meat Hall from 1546, the inn of Maison Havart from 1594 and end up at the city quays.  You can check out the daily Batte Market or the flea market every Sunday, at the Quai de La Batte. Take in the Old Town and its 18th Century buildings as well as the Museum of Walloon Art that features local artists.  You can even take a peek into the bourgeois lifestyle of the nobility of the 18th Century at the Michel Willems House.  Further afield is the absolutely beautiful Ourthe Valley where you can take a forest walk, a boat trip on the Ourthe River and visit the "Pearl of the Ardennes" town of La Roche-en-Ardennes and also Durbuy, where time has stood still.
