About Southampton
A port city reclining on the south coast of England, Southampton is the largest city in what is known as the "ceremonial county" of Hampshire, 111km southwest of London and 24km from Portsmouth. It sits where the Itchen and Test Rivers meet the River Hamble and has a population of about 253,651 souls breathing its air and slurping espresso in its cafes before heading off to a coworking venue to get some stuff done. Known for its association with the RMS Titanic (you know the ship that sank) and the Spitfire (think planes), Southampton was one of the departure points for D-Day during World War II. Today it's where the largest cruise ships in the world disgorge hordes, where you will find the SeaCity Museum and the Solent Sky Museum with its vintage aircraft on display and the place where shopaholics can hang out in huge shopping centers thrashing credit cards. Coworking venues are giving its locals, consisting of a large population of students attending one of the city's universities, somewhere to hang out and get stuff done in a happy frame of mind.
Known as a music hub with plenty of venues to hear one of your favorite bands, Southampton is awash in theaters, eclectic art galleries and museums. It was the birthplace of numerous contemporary musicians such as Craig David and Coldplay drummer "Will Champion", plus numerous rock and metal bands were formed in the city. Over 600 exhibitors show up each year to flash their floating palaces at the Southampton Boat Show and plenty of areas are undergoing redevelopment with many major projects in the pipeline due to its strong economy.
