About Seri Kembangan

Formerly known as "Serdang New Village, Seri Kembangan sits in Selangor, Malaysia. It has a tropical rainforest climate with the city being protected by the Titwangsa Mountains in the east and Indonesia's Sumatra Island in the west. This translates to warm and sunny days with a lot of rain, especially during the monsoon season. The city was established in 1952 when the British moved the Malaysian Chinese villagers living around Sungai Besi to a central location because of the communist threat during the Malayan Emergency. It began as a village of some 50 houses in an area that was really close to rubber estates and the jungle. Today there are about 2,500 houses. Coworking has hit its streets for its inhabitants who are mostly businessmen, professionals, entrepreneurs and government servants.

After the 1998 Commonwealth Games, the town became a business hub with plenty of shopping options springing up. It is widely known for its brilliant street food (curb de cuisine) that comes in all nationalities from Malay to Indian to Chinese with a dash of other cultures as well. The streets are literally lined with nasi lemak, curry noodles, mamak fried mee or rojak, to name a few dishes to scoff.

Seri Kembangan is a part of the growing startup scene happening throughout Malaysia. The Malaysian government has offered incentives and support for foreign tech companies to base their operations within the country, such as up to 10 years tax exemption and the ability to employ foreign workers. Today startups are in a better position to succeed more so than ever before and there is boundless positive sentiment within the industry, despite the remaining challenges to be faced.

Coworking venues appearing in Seri Kembangan are giving the locals the place to gather en masse with likeminded souls where they can get their work done in a collaborative space, plus there are the hawker stalls to run to when the hunger pangs strike.
