One of New York City's boroughs, Brooklyn is located on the western end of Long Island connected to Manhattan via the iconic Brooklyn Bridge (1883 - the world's first steel-wire suspension bridge). It is an enclave and hotspot for indie music, nightlife and the arts. From its amusement parks to the beachfront of Coney Island, it is cloaked in lush leafy row house filled districts with a distinct culture and ethnic closets. Despite its size being on the small side, Brooklyn has the most people living in its rarified atmosphere of being a dynamic hub for high technology startups, postmodern art, entrepreneurship and design.
Clusters of different cultures (think Polish, Italian, Chinese, Russian and Irish) swamp individual areas with their unique eccentricities and the cuisines they can offer. Sometimes referred to as the "Borough of Homes and Churches", you can meander around Prospect Park designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, who also designed New York City's Central Park. Make a point to duck into one of the 700 art and cultural institutions for some inspiration or wander along the 30 miles of waterfront to get fit. You can scream your lungs out on the Cyclone roller coaster at Coney Island that has been operating for over 83 years, or stuff yourself silly over brunch at one of the many funky eateries. Enjoy the jaw dropping view from the Brooklyn Bridge over lower Manhattan or explore the Brooklyn Museum where you can view art pieces of the likes of Monet and Degas. Take the time to chill out in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and rub shoulders with the locals at the Brooklyn Flea market, where you may just find a hidden treasure.
