Grab some walking shoes to take a stroll around this compact lively university town. With historical ghosts from before the 12th Century, Plovdiv has over 200 archeological sites to ponder over as you take a stroll back in time. It is one of the world's oldest cities where the Persians, Greeks, Celts, Romans, Goths, Huns, Turks etc - you get the picture - it seems to have been over run by all the marauding hordes of history at one time or another. Sitting on the banks of the Maritsa River, it is often referred to as "The City of the Seven Hills" due to the hills surrounding it.
Today it is a wealthy and cosmopolitan city that has been selected as the Bulgarian host for the European Capital of Culture 2019 festival. Awash in neavoux art galleries, bohemian cafes, stylish restaurants and cobblestoned streets and alleys plus a dynamic night life, there is a brash young vibe about the town. In Plovdiv's heart is a shop-lined pedestrian mall for those that want a touch of retail therapy, a Roman Stadium that is still in use today and a sunny square with a gushing water fountain. The shady Tsar Simeon Garden is the perfect place to take time out from gawking at ancient medieval walls, towers, theaters, Ottoman baths and mosques.
