Located in the historical province of Estremadura, the beautiful city of Caldas de Rainha in western central Portugal is much like a hidden gem. When the city was first founded in the 15th century, Queen Rainha Dona Leonor established a hospital and a church at the site of some therapeutic hot springs, which is now the oldest purpose-built institution of its kind in the world. Often, the city is simply called “Caldas” — translating to the “Queen’s Hot Springs” or “Queen’s Spa.”

As a UNESCO Creative City, Caldas de Rainha is home to many cultural institutions including nine museums, covering art, cycling, and the city’s unique history. After a day of coworking in one of the city’s many shared workspaces, you can venture to Caldas’ center for the performing arts, several football pitches, and even a bullring. As one of the easiest cities in Portugal to navigate, there is plenty of well-connected public transportation, making it an extremely livable and inviting city as well. And, as a place where the nobility and bourgeoisie gathered back in the day, Caldas de Rainha is also home to much distinguished architecture from the Baroque to Art Nouveau.
