About Greenbelt

A city in the state of Maryland, Greenbelt is actually a suburb of Washington D.C. It was the 1st and the largest of 3 experimental and controversial "New Deal" Greenbelt Towns (think collective and cooperative ideology) that were planned and built by the Federal government of the United States in the 1930s. The town was built in Art Deco, Streamline Modern and Bauhaus architectural styles and the residents were selected through a stringent and restrictive application process. Today it's known as "Old Greenbelt" and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Landmark District. Credited with being an historic milestone in urban development, Greenbelt has a population of about the 23,068 mark. Coworking venues have popped up in the town for its inventive locals that have no wish to enter the fray of big city life.

Greenbelt is no tech or startup hub per se and is like many other small cities where high-tech businesses need to regroup, rethink and rehash to come up with new ideas that haven't been exploited by the tech giants. The slowing down of new tech businesses is being attributed to numerous factors such as an aging population and fewer technologies and ideas to exploit. The tech titans such as Facebook, Apple and Amazon are dominating the playing field leaving less room for innovators to break in.

With a mature ecosystem, the fledgling startups of the United States today need to dream bigger, get craftier and widen their imaginations to capture a new market space. Coworking venues are providing the space for collaboration for the tech savvy souls who have the hope and the will to succeed, or the space to work for remote workers.
