About Durango
The capital and largest city of the Mexican state of Durango, Durango city was founded in 1563 and includes the outlying communities of El Nayar and Cinco de Mayo. Built in a wide valley where once stood a primitive Spanish village named Nombre de Dios, Durango is awash in colonial history and its buildings are characterized by the eclectic mix of Barcelona, Paris, Madrid and Florence influences.
A million people flock to Durango in the summer for its annual month-long Feria Nacional De Durange (Durango's National Festival) that has taken place since 1929. This is when the fireworks go off in celebration of its founding. The history fiends or museum buffs will love Durango, as there are plenty of museums to go through: Museo Regional de Durango, Museo Arqueologico de Durango Ganot-Peschard, Museo de Arte Moderno Guillermo Ceniceros and the list goes on. The Durango Powerhouse Museum is the oldest known steam-powered AC power plant still surviving.
During the summer months the Animas River is where to go for whitewater rafting or fly fishing. In the winter take on the mountains skiing, snowboarding and zooming around on a snowmobile. If you want to get the adrenalin pumping, then have a go at zip lining through the forest canopy or ride like a true cowboy at one of the ranches. You can even go underground on a mine tour or hang out in one of the 18 soaking pools of hot therapeutic mineral water at the Springs Resort. All year round, you can grab some culture at the Henry Strater Theater or find a trail to run, walk or bike amidst fountains, stunning gardens and wooded forests at El Parque Guadiana.
