A major tourist hub swamped with top-end swanky restaurants, the highest concentration of hotels and boutique shopping of destroy the credit card type, Tsim Sha Tsui sits on the cape of the Kowloon Peninsula looking towards Victoria Harbor. It is a part of the Mong District. In Chinese, Tsim Sha Tsui translates to "sharp sand mouth", which seems to be quite apt given its location. It was referred to as Heung Po Tau (the fragrant quay), the port for exporting the incense tree, a medicinal plant named "agar wood". Now this urban area located in southern Kowloon is often abbreviated to TST. Built on reclaimed land and once overflowing with garden houses, the area was developed into a swathe of crowded residential blocks with wharves along the western shore.
You won't have any trouble getting around the area, as there are plenty of buses and ferries to jump on or off, as the fancy takes you. The museum buff will wet their pants as many of Hong Kong's museums are in the area, actually too many to name. Landmarks worth checking out include the old Clock Tower, the Hong Kong Space Museum and the Hong Kong Cultural Center. Exotic restaurants flourish in Lock Road, Hillwood Road and Observatory Hill, whilst you will find pub after pub lining Knutsford Terrace. If your taste buds fancy a bit of Korean cuisine then you should head to Kimberley Street, or go to Georgetown Parade for some Indian fare amidst the money changing stalls so that you can swoop into the Gucci store for a shopping spree.
If you don't want to spend a fortune, head to the Kowloon Park that is complete with a sculpture garden, an aviary and swimming pools, to mingle with the locals or gawk at the multitude of tourists. If you are into photography, make sure you get to the waterfront as you can snap that perfect pic of an unobstructed view of the central area of Hong Kong looking across Victoria Harbor.
