About Leiden

A small city in South Holland, Leiden is wall-to-wall students with a whopping 27,000 hanging around its streets, in its cafes and pubs. Vibrant and dynamic, it is known for its centuries-old architecture, the country's oldest university dating from 1575 and meandering canals flanked by stunning 17th Century buildings. This is the birthplace of Rembrandt and if we are throwing out famous names, Einstein actually taught at the university. For a bit of seafaring trivia, it was the city in which the Pilgrims raised the money to lease the Mayflower that took them to the New World in 1620. Today you can find coworking venues opening their doors to give its creative youth and innovative locals, plus the odd globetrotting nomad, somewhere to get their work done.

If you have a green thumb and wish to gawk at the place where the tulip was introduced to Western Europe, head to the university where you will find the Hortus botanicus Leiden Botanical Garden that was founded in 1590. Artsy types can saunter around the Museum de Lakenhal and peek at works by the Dutch Masters, whilst time-out can be had along the pretty canals. Sitting between The Hague and Amsterdam, it is easy to check out either town for a day. Don't forget to take in the De Valk windmill that is probably the most famous landmark in Leiden and for the mad professors into scientific stuff, there are several museums that will give you wet pant moments.

Many coworking venues have their doors open most days of the week, but do take time out either on a Wednesday or a Saturday to check out the market stalls lining the city center to pick up some fresh balls of gouda or a bunch of colorful tulips.
