About Alcala de Henares

Sitting in the heart of central Spain only 35km from the tech hub of Madrid, Alcala de Henares is home to the University of Alcala, which is based in beautiful 16th Century buildings in the old town. For the literary lovers', close to the university you will find the Cervantes Birthplace Museum that was the former home of the celebrated author of "Don Quixote". Locally referred to as simply "Alcala", the city is known for its rich archaeology and its historical center is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city has been run over by the Romans, the Visgoths and the Moors, as well as suffering heaps of damage during the Spanish Civil War. Coworking venues have now opened up on its streets where large white stork nests adorn many of the tops of the buildings in rustic array. There is believed to be about 90 resident pairs with many of them remaining in the city most of the year.

Alcala has winding cobbled streets with medieval buildings everywhere you glance. The life of the city can be found in Cervantes Square (Plaza de Cervantes) where you can sit and sip espresso or leisurely have a long lunch at one of the many cafes. There is a long pedestrian main street, so you don't have to worry about the troublesome car drivers. For those who like to stroll around old cities, Alcala has a Moorish quarter, a Jewish quarter and the Christian quarter to poke your nose around. It's because of these different areas that Alcala is said to be the "city of 3 cultures".

There is a large community of international students with the University of Alcala being one of the major foreign language learning centers. Spain is a magnet for traveling souls due to its laid-back vibe, tapas munching culture and relatively cheap lifestyle. There are plenty of opportunities for tech savvy entrepreneurs with Spanish startups growing 7% in 2017 and signs pointing to a consolidation within the startup community. Spain's entrepreneurial activity is spread throughout the whole country with hot spots in Madrid and Barcelona, as well as within smaller regions. Coworking venues are giving the Alcala locals the space to meet, connect and collaborate, with the advantage of being able to get to Madrid quickly if a big city fix is needed.
