About Rio Grande
The wealthy city of Rio Grande is one of the oldest cities in the area of Rio Grande do Sul and has a thriving port that is the second busiest in Brazil. For the traveler, it seems to be the city is a mere backdrop to what you can find within close proximity surrounding it.
It is the land of cowboys with broad big hats and red neck ties that spend their days cattle herding, where the canyons are covered in dense forest with gushing waterfalls and alpine villages snugly rest in the mountains. Rio Grande is the acclaimed wine region of Brazil. This region is in total contrast to what many people think of as "Brazilian". Its history and customs are infused with the bullish independent streak of gauchos, the resolute Portuguese, Spanish, Italian and German settlers. Think apple strudel, pasta, chimarrao and churrasco all thrown together on a table and washed down with some evra mate tea slurped from a communal cup.
For the adrenalin junky there is paradise to be found close by to the city in the deep canyons and panoramic mountains of the national parks, such as Aparados da Serra. You can take a hike or go rappelling with a local tour company from the dusty village of Cambara do Sul. If a bit of wildlife spotting is your thing, you will find boars, foxes and ostriches slinking through the ecological diversity of these wild woods.
