About Cascais
Think strutting along a seaside promenade, rolling a few dices in one of Europe's oldest casinos, international film festivals and dynamic jazz concerts and you have one of the most stunning towns in Cascais, where the beautiful people play by day on the brilliant beaches and by night in one of the many nightclubs. Cosmopolitan Cascais is 30 km from Lisbon and the seaside resort town where Portugal's royal families of the 19th and early 20th Centuries came to chill out. Cradled between Cascais Bay and the dramatic Sintra Mountains, it was the neutral territory during World War II where European royalty sought some peace. Once a fishing village, today it is one of Portugal's most sophisticated destinations.
Meander around the Largo de Camoes square, the historic heart of the town dotted with cafes and restaurants and burn a hole in your credit card along the shopping mecca street "Rua Direita". Stroll down to the picturesque Pescadores Beach where you will find leathery skinned old fishermen bent over mending their nets whilst at the nearby marina, glitzy luxury white boats will shine like diamonds. The marina is the place to head to at night for seafood dishes that will make your mouth water, hip boutiques to destroy your bank balance and elegant bars to partake of a beverage or two. Head to the Guincho Beach for unspoiled sand dunes and wild waves, a beachfront bar and a hot dog van that will have you drooling. If you want to hang with the pretty people then head to the swanky Quinta da Marinha, where you can have a game of golf or tennis.
Museums, monuments and fortresses will not let you forget that you are actually in an ancient village with a seafaring heritage.
