A large border city sitting in Cameron County of Texas, Brownsville is in the southernmost tip on the northern bank of the Rio Grande across the border from Mexico.  Unfortunately Brownsville has the highest poverty rates in the country and is known for having the highest percentage of residents below the federal poverty level.  Its economy is mainly based on its international trade with Mexico and is ranked as one of the cheapest places to live in the whole of the United States.

Here you can take to the Texan wilderness with a local guide and spot some wildlife or if comfort is more your thing, then go to the Gladys Porter Zoo that is dedicated to conserving the endangered wildlife.  Spread over 31 acres you will find 300 animal species and about 200 plant species reflecting their local natural habitats from Asia, Africa, Indo-Australia and the American tropics.  You can join an educational program such as a safari-themed sleepover or just learn about zoo keeping and animal behavior. For the wildlife lover there is also the Sabal Palm Audubon Center and Sanctuary that covers 557 acres of protected forest where you can take a guided tour to see local Mexican and Texan creatures hiding out in their homes.

If you are more into a bit of battle worship, then go to the Palo Alto Battlefield National Historic Site.  This is where you can see re-enactments of the Palo Alto battle of 1846 between the Mexican and American armies.  You can put on your hiking shoes and take to the trails through 3,400 acres on a bird watching mission or just a total blissful time out walk.  Annually there is a remembrance celebration for those who fought in the Palo Alto Battle with the lighting of 8,000 candles, one for each of the soldiers who fought on both sides.  For the history buff, there is the Costumes of the America's Museum to wander through where you get to see the true South, North and Central American culture in the traditional tribal and religious clothing, art and crafts on display.
