A city in the northern district of Porto with a population of about 45,703, Matosinhos is an urban area where the international Leixoes Cruise Terminal, an oil refinery and EFACEC (a Portuguese company in the electro mechanics industry) are located. It's also home to the Pedro Hispano Hospital that is one of the biggest state-run hospitals of Portugal. This is where the locals of Porto come to dine and kickback, as it's the source of the city's fish and seafood with a profusion of restaurants and cafes especially sitting on the beachfront of the town. A surfer's paradise, the Matosinhos beach is one of the best in the Porto area with its oceanfront still defended by 17th Century forts. If you need to say a little prayer for the success of your startup there are plenty of Baroque and medieval churches to meander into or you could always walk through the door of a coworking space and just get on with it.

Portugal is rising unshackled from almost half a century of authoritarian rule and is trying to reinvent itself as Europe's leading tech hub. Known for its cheap rents, incredible cultural scene and awesome quality of life, Portugal is promoting the fact that it also has an economy based on knowledge and an entrepreneurial community that is growing by the day.

With its change in government, wealth of tech talent and the fact that nearly everyone speaks English, Portugal is seeing the return of many of its youth that had fled to what they perceived to be better startup shores. With the advent of coworking spaces, it is not only the innovative locals hanging out in the establishments, but the wandering globe-trotters who tend to linger for far longer than what they planned to. And when work starts to create brain implosions, there is always the beckoning beach to run to.
