About Santa Teresa

The area of Santa Teresa and Malpais are small fishing villages on the southern end of the Nicoya Peninsula along Costa Rica's Pacific coast.  Unspoiled by tourist hordes, they are connected to Playa del Carmen by a single road.  This is where celebrities such as Mel Gibson and Gisele Bundchen have chosen to escape to, building fabulous mansions for their private hideaways.  Named by Forbes Magazine in the top 10 most beautiful places in the world, it is still a retreat for adventurous travelers and known as a surfing enclave.  Awash in white sandy coves, rocky outcrops and jungle-smothered hills, there is an abundance of wildlife in this quite undeveloped and remote area that somehow has achieved a rustic modern appeal.

This is where motorcycles and quad bikes often with a surfboard rack reign due to the number of pot holed dirt roads and there is no public transport to get you around.  You can do a bit of celebrity spotting around the cafes in the area whilst you nonchalantly sip your espresso or enjoy scoffing down some food in one of the many excellent restaurants dishing up brilliant food of a run-away chef. Along the southern Nicoya Peninsula coastline you will find surf breaks to have you begging for someone's board to borrow if you don't have one. Spend time at a yoga retreat for a more calm connection with the spiritual world or grab a fishing charter and try to land a mahi-mahi or dorado, the big ones of the deep. Glory in a bit of sun worshipping on one of the glorious beaches dotted around or take to the Cabo Blanco Absolute Nature Reserve with its 5 different eco-systems.

If you happen to be there in February you can play with the sabaneros - aka Costa Rican cowboys - at the Fiestas Civicas de Cobano.  A massive 2-week long festival celebrating the culture and traditions of cattle ranching where there is food galore and a rodeo to have you squirming in your seat or running with the bulls in the ring.
