About Annecy

-Think of crunchy French baguettes and tantalizing goats' cheese washed down with a glass of rose and you will be transported to the cobbled streets of the historic town of Annecy in the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes region of France. Sitting on the northern tip of Lake Annecy, the medieval Château d’Annecy where counts once lived, looks grandly over the city of winding canals and pastel colored houses below it. Tuck into some pasta and you would think you were sitting in Venice, Italy.

Annecy is only 35km from Geneva and is fondly nicknamed the "Pearl of the French Alps" or "Venice of the Alps". The town is picturesque and a tourist magnet for its stunning beauty and quaint charm. It is where the bishop took refuge during the Calvinist Reformation of Geneva in 1536. Historically a silk manufacturing center, it was awarded the "Golden Flower" in 2015 for being 1 of 9 most-flowered French cities.

Annecy is a town to get lost in with true flair, either by riding a bicycle along one of its many tracks around Lake Annecy lying at the foot of the town, or simply winding through the maze of little narrow lanes where cafes and bakeries will have you scoffing down way too many delectable pastries or partaking of too many buzzing caffeine hits. You can play around on the lake in a boat or a pedal boat, if you are not worried about your cool image being destroyed. Definitely a must do, is to indulge in a decadent lunch at the Michelin star restaurant, Le Belvedere, where you can sit on a terrace and gaze over the lake, taking the mickey out of the dorks in the pedal boats. Checking out the Palais de I'lle, perched on a rock island, is de rigueur. It was built as a prison in the 12th Century. There are plenty of other sights to keep the eye feast happening, such as the neo-classical Notre Dame de Liesse Church with its clock tower from the 1500s and Gothic stained glass window to admire.
