About Tashkent

A multi-ethnic city with about 2,200 years of written history, Tashkent is the most cosmopolitan city in Uzbekistan cloaked in tree-lined streets, a plethora of tinkling fountains and lush green parks. The capital and largest city of the country, it has a population of a massive 2,485,900 people milling about its heaving streets, sipping coffee or hanging out in creative mode in coworking venues. More a gateway for tourists wanting to go somewhere else, Tashkent is worth spending some time in for its incredible restaurants, dynamic nightlife and wealth of museums to poke your nose into. If none of that turns you on, you can flee the city bustle and head to Ugam-Chatkal National Park (only 1.5 hours away) to indulge in hiking, rafting and skiing. Close to the Kazakhstan border, the city is one part newly built, one part leafy Soviet city and in another area the domain of traditionally clad farmers, carts and mud-walled houses.

There is a plethora of educational institutions in the city such as the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan spewing out tech savvy youth and creating a huge talent pool. The government is putting a number of initiatives in place to kickstart entrepreneurship and to encourage foreign investment in the city. It's also urging expats to return home so that they can play a key role in developing the IT program with promises of high pay, research funding plus other benefits.

With still a few hurdles to get over to improve the IT scene in Uzbekistan, coworking venues are providing the space for techies to get together in collaboration mode with likeminded souls.
