Pine tree dotted Manly perched on its own peninsula near the Sydney Harbor, the Sydney Harbor National Park and the Pacific Ocean, is the birthplace of Australian surfing and one of five surfing reserves in the world. Obviously the original settlers were in love with the Brighton seaside of the UK, as the design of this town, mimic that one. Quite a few Italians must have been involved in its settlement as Manly's main street, The Corso, is also a case of being a copycat of that of the Via del Corso in Rome.
A laid back and ultra casual beach vibe with over 200 retails stores, 130 cafes, bars and restaurants sit on the foreshore of over 40 beaches. This typical Australian beachside town attracts the super rich, the mega stars, the average plodder and of course, the world's best surfers. It is all about the beaches of long stretches of sand. Both the ocean and harbor beaches are covered in iconic Norfolk Island pine trees and bushland where if you are not into the ocean pursuits, you can take fantastic walks seeking out aboriginal landmarks and shy wildlife.
Manly is home to one of the last colonies of little fairy penguins who have made their home under the Manly Wharf, taking a waddle down for a dip in the water when the fancy takes them. Seahorses have actually built their community around the sea nets that line the swimming pool in the ocean.
Only 15 minutes by ferry from the Sydney central business district, Manly could be a world away.
