About Honduras

A popular scuba diving destination due to its stunning and mega sized barrier reef; Honduras is a Central American country with its feet in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Sitting off its coastline you will find the Bay Islands, an underwater fantasyland for those that like to blow bubbles underwater whilst playing with fish.

The Internet has been available in Honduras since 1990 with about 18.1% of the population connected and all the major media having an Internet presence. Despite the government having no restrictions on Internet access and their laws providing for freedom of speech and press, journalists have been killed and there have been reports of intimidation and harassment. Most journalists practice self-censorship, due to their fear of reprisal from organized crime.

It has a population of approximately 8 million and is officially known as the Republic of Honduras or Spanish Honduras bordered by Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, the Gulf of Fonseca, the Gulf of Honduras and a large inlet of the Caribbean Sea. Stained with a history of Mesoamerican and Mayan culture, the Spanish invaded the country in the 16th Century. Today you can still see an ancient Mayan ceremonial site "Copan" in a jungle near Guatemala of stone-carved hieroglyphics and tall stone monuments. The country has consistently struggled with political stability, social issues and is one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere, with one of the highest murder rates in the world.
