Steeped in history, Mobile is home to a bustling seaport district, with thriving shipbuilding and aerospace industries. Australian defense and commercial shipbuilding company Austal has its US production HQ here, plus a $600 million aircraft assembly plant for Airbus (the first Airbus factory built in the U.S.).
As the birthplace of Mardi Gras and the spectacular Carnival celebration, Mobile is truly a city that knows how to have fun. To get around and see the sights take the free MODA trolley, a pure-electric transit service with 22 stops downtown. The Lower Dauphin Street Historic District is a cultural hub, full of great restaurants and entertainment. The city also has a huge live music scene - check out the Oakleigh District for the truly local venues, or head down to the Causeway to enjoy beats with a waterfront view. And to enjoy a step back in time, wander down Government Street from Broad to Ann Street to see massive oak trees embracing huge, historic mansions.
Just be prepared to do a lot of eating while you're here - aside from Mardi Gras and music, this city is all about the food. Here you can sample a great blend of Southern specialties, Cajun creations, and Creole cuisine. Moe's Original Bar-B-Que downtown pretty much speaks for itself, while Mama's on Dauphin offers some of the best Southern home cooking in town. For seafood, the Causeway is the best place to sample po'boys, raw oysters, crawfish, and more.
