About Kiel

With a population of 250,000 people, Kiel is the capital and most populous city in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein. Thanks to its location on the Jutland Peninsula in the Baltic Sea, Kiel has served as one of Germany’s historic maritime centers, and is host to a wide range of sailing competitions and activities during Kiel Week — the largest sailing event in the world.

To this day, Kiel acts as an important maritime center for the EU’s largest economy. Kiel is a hub for high-tech shipbuilding, submarine construction, and is home to the IFM-GEOMAR — one of the three leading institutions in the field of marine sciences in Europe.

Kiel is home to an array of beautiful architecture, including the Kiel Operahouse, the Rathaus (town hall), and perhaps most notably it’s oldest building — the 13th century Church of St Nicholas. Kiel is also home to a number of lakes and parks, such as Schrevenpark, the Old Botanical Garden, and the Botanischer Garten der Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel. A range of museums and galleries, including the zoological, geological, and fine art museums, make Kiel a perfect destination for lovers of both arts and sciences.

Kiel boasts of a bustling economy that is home to numerous military contractors and engineering firms, among others. Coworking spaces in Kiel are highly popular, as local industry responds to the market demands for flexible offices and hybrid workspaces, reflecting a greater respect for a work-life balance that benefits remote workers, SMEs, and business owners alike.
