About Cape Town

Called the "Mother City", Cape Town is one of the places in the world to go tobogganing, with the only tobogganing track in Africa. It is where couples actually get married on Table Mountain, despite having to get there via a wooden and steel cableway built in 1929. Nelson Mandela was imprisoned in Cape Town and it is home to the oldest colonial building in South Africa, the famous Castle of Good Hope.  Today it is where you can join in to the biggest "queer" party of all, the "Mother City Queer Project", that is the largest annual costume carnival in South Africa. Dressed in some very expensive real estate as in the mansion variety, it is a dynamic and vibrant city, with nearly half of its population under 25 years of age.

If getting married on a mountain top is not on your agenda, or for those that wish to run away from their nuptials, you can always abseil back down the mountain clinging to 112 meters of rope. For those wishing to stretch their legs, it is possible to trek down, but not for the feint hearted.  Feeling brave?  Try diving in a shark cage to get up close and personal with about 40 sharks that hang around the dive area or stay dry and go to the Two Oceans Aquarium to see the monsters of the sea.  For those that are interested in the apartheid era of South Africa, visit Robben Island where Nelson Mandela spent 18 years or the District Six Museum that exposes the "white only" policy implications. There is a "Museum Mile" to explore, beautiful sandy beaches to laze on and penguins to play with at Boulders Beach.

Chow down with the locals and sample some flatbreads, samosas, lamb denningvleis or Malay curries, peri-peri prawns, Ethiopian lamb or African spinach patties.  The traditional mealie meal porridge has to be on the list of taste sampling, as does some pan-fried springbok or ostrich fillets.  Meal times are a funfest of playing with your food in your hands when the flatbread comes in handy for mopping up the sauces.  Or, go to Long Street and join the other revelers indulging in a few drinks at one of the many funky bars.
