The Metropolitan is a building of unmatched standards not only in Poland but also across Europe. Designed by Lord Foster, the building complements its historical surroundings through the use of state-of-the-art technologies and world-class architecture. Most of the post-war production plants have gone, but Warsaw still has a steel mill and a car factory, and is home to many national institutions and government agencies as well as domestic and international companies. Poland's capital has seen increased foreign investment and economic growth in recent years and has outstanding new healthcare facilities and much-improved infrastructure with new roads, bridges and flyovers. Loughborough University's Globalisation and World Cities (GaWC) Study Group and Network has classed Warsaw as a major world city, on a par with Rome and Amsterdam, and it ranked 8th out of 65 cities in Mastercard's Emerging Markets Index in 2008.
