About Ridgewood

A village in New Jersey, Ridgewood is known as a "bedroom community" of New York City sitting 32 km from Midtown Manhattan. Its history goes back to 1700 when the first house was built in Ridgewood, but the actual village was not created until 1894. Originally settled by Dutch farmers, the railroad appeared in the 1850s.

For the historian there is a plethora of places on the National Register of Historic Places to explore, such as Ackerman House built in 1787 and the Ackerman-Van Emburgh House from 1785. The Paramus Reformed Church Historic District where you will find the Old Paramus Reformed Church (1725) that was used by the Continental Army for several years and was the site of the court martial of General Charles Lee in 1778 after his retreat at the Battle of Monmouth Court House during the American Revolution. You should continue the journey into the past by visiting the War Memorial in Van Neste Square downtown Ridgewood, where the names of the citizens of Ridgewood who gave their lives during numerous wars are listed.
Once the history lesson is over, there may be more moments of quiet contemplation than running around town looking for tourist activities. However there are free summer concerts to be enjoyed if you BYO blanket, drinks and food most Tuesday and Thursday nights at the Veterans Field behind the Library and Village Hall. The daytime activity is to join the mums, dads and various rug rats at the local town swimming pool or head to the local museum for a few hours of gawking at quirky objects from long past.
