About Yangon

Yangon is not for your average nomad. Gritty and undeveloped compared to other major hubs in Southeast Asia, it has seen minimal tourism and foreign investment until just the past few years. For the entrepreneur who demands quality internet at every moment, Yangon may never be more than a brief visa run holiday from Thailand. But for those who are willing to invest in installing broadband internet in their flat, purchase a membership at one of the limited coworking spots, or embrace the adventure of slow and unreliable but free cafe Wi-Fi, Yangon has the potential to be immensely rewarding.

Myanmar's former capital and largest commercial center has a kind of charm one might imagine of Bangkok 25 years ago. Aside from a few hotels, condos, and office buildings under 10 stories, the city has no real skyscrapers. Instead, it boasts the higher number of British colonial-era buildings in Southeast Asia, and while many are in less-than-perfect conditions, they are some of the most desirable (and expensive) properties and protected from demolition by Yangon's heritage stipulations.

While the center of the city and expat-popular Bahan township may have the peaceful Kandawgyi Lake, the stunning Shwedagon Pagoda with hair relics of the Buddha, and wide, tree-lined boulevards, keep in mind that the satellite towns around the city remain in extreme poverty. Despite their hardships, locals tend to hold deeply the Buddhist values of hospitality, goodwill, and compassion towards one another and even foreigners. This touching surprise may be the most beautiful thing about the raw, undiscovered nation of Myanmar as a whole.
