Known as the gateway to the Cameron Highlands or as a way station on the way to Penang, Ipoh is a city in the northwestern region of Malaysia and is a food lover's haven. This is a town for the gastronomes in search of its iconic dish "tauge ayam" (think chicken and bean sprouts) or "kopi putih", which is white coffee that has an ongoing debate over where to find the best. Ipoh serenely sits beside the Kinta River in the state of Perak, surrounded by huge white cliffs and limestone hills hiding caves that are Buddhist temples. It has a buzzing population of 657,892 people. One of the cleanest cities in Malaysia, it sits between Kuala Lumpur and George Town. The travel experts have dubbed the city the "Hipster Capital of Malaysia" for its diverse and eclectic souls that hang out here with the locals. Originally a small village, it expanded rapidly in the 1880s when tin deposits were discovered. Ipoh declined when the tin ran out, but has now given itself a makeover creating a flurry of tourism interest.

Ipoh may not be a tech hub, but it does have many locals wishing to start something of their own. Malaysian entrepreneurship is very much alive and there have been a few extremely successful startups such as Grab, Jobstreet, MOL and Airasia to come out of the country. With this in mind, it's little wonder that coworking venues are hives of activity and collaboration.
