A nice place, but isolating if you are not Armenian
19.11.2019Impact Hub Yerevan is a very nice space. They have good desks, a nice office, and a good location, as well as good internet and reasonable prices. There are some nice features, like the community lunches, where you can get a good home-cooked meal for ~1,500 dram. If you are looking for somewhere to work, it has many good features. After being a member for four months, however, I gotta say I'm pretty disappointed with the community side of things - if you yourself (like me) are not Armenian. Simply put, 99% of the members are Armenian (either local or diaspora) and all conversations and socializing takes place in Armenian. There's plenty of socializing and people having fun going on, but as a foreigner you will never be able to take part. Even though the majority of members speak English, they are often also quite closed and unwilling to befriend non-Armenians (this applies also to many diasporans there). I'm quite an outgoing person and as someone new in the city was really hoping to make some friends at the space, but with a handful of exceptions it has not happened. This is a broader problem with Yerevan and Armenia as a whole - if you are not Armenian, you really feel that you don't belong here and there is no place for you - but it was sadly my experience at Impact Hub as well.
