About Vergennes

Sitting in Addison County of Vermont, rural Vergennes is bordered by Ferrisburgh, Panton and Waltham towns. The smallest city in terms of population with only 2,588 souls living in the town, it is often referred to as "The Little City". Established in 1788, it was named after a French nobleman who gave his fortune to aid the American cause during the Revolution and it is Vermont's oldest city. Quirky but true, whilst Matthew Lyons was squandering his time in a Vergennes jail he was elected to Congress, the only man in American history to have this distinguished record.

A universe of Native American, French and English cultures showcased in architecture reminiscent of 19th Century New England, the town sits on Otter Creek. The historic downtown area is a treat to stroll around and shouldn't be missed. The refurbished Vergennes Opera House from 1897 is the Performing Arts Center and the restored Old Train Station is possibly the oldest clapboard train station in Vermont. Settlers Park is where to head to with your boat in tow for a paddle up Otter Creek, whilst the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum shows off the bloody battles and bootlegging operations that took place in Vergennes' history. The town is a cyclists dream enclave for the variety of riding trails and stunning scenery, where you can ride past centuries-old farmhouses and split-rail fences on predominantly level ground. There is a huge list of riding loops of varying length and endurance, beginning and ending in the main street of town.
