About Hudson

The movie "Ironweed" starring Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep was filmed in Hudson, the city named after the adjacent Hudson River and the explorer Henry Hudson. Sitting on the border of Columbia County, New York, it has a small population of around the 6,700 souls living in it. The main street of Hudson is awash in antique shops, which contributed to its revival after a decline in popularity in the 1960s and the 1970s. It is known for being a bit of an LGBT haven with an active arts scene, funky restaurants, a plethora of art galleries and a vibrant nightlife. With this rejuvenation many of its historic houses have been restored and it now hosts an annual gay pride parade.

Sitting on a spit of land jutting into the Hudson River, the town is uber small and compact, perfect for walking around. On the opposite bank of the Hudson River you will find the town of Athens, which is connected to Hudson by a ferry. Hudson has a history from the 19th and 20th centuries as being a den of iniquity where prostitution and gambling were rife with over 50 bars littering its streets at that time. It has been called the "finest dictionary of American architecture in New York State" due to the number of houses on the National Register of Historical Places. There are plenty for you to gawk at when you walk around the city, such as the Elisha Williams House and the Oliver Wiswall House as well as the entire Hudson Historic District. If you like to play firemen, then you should head to the Museum of Firefighting that was also the first nursing home in the country solely for firemen.

There are many funky little cafes to sip an espresso in and restaurants specializing in dishing up divine dishes from locally sourced produce.
