About Warren

Warren is the largest city in Macomb County in the state of Michigan. Founded in 1830, the city is home to General Motors Technical Center, the United States Army Detroit Arsenal plus several other major corporations. Initially a carriage stop between Detroit and Utica, the sum total of buildings in the town was a mill, a tavern, a distillery and a trading post. Warren is believed to be named after Rev Abel Warren, a War of 1812 veteran and frontier cleric, who was a Methodist Episcopal preacher from New York. The other story about its name is said that Warren was named after General Joseph Warren (1714-1775), who was killed at the Battle of Bunker Hill. So, who knows what the truth is.

The city experienced a major population boost between the years of 1950 and 1960, when it doubled from around 42,000 to nearly 90,000 local souls, due to the post-WWII "Baby Boom" and the flight of whites from its southern neighbor Detroit. By 1970, the locals had increased to around the 180,000 mark. Now unfortunately, Warren is ranked 7th on the list of Most Miserable Cities to Live In and has declined in population and increased in violent crime. There are quite a few historical landmarks in the city including the Detroit Arsenal Tank Plant, the Detroit Memorial Park Cemetery, the Warren Union Cemetery, the General Motors Technical Center, and the John Theisen House.

You may be better off hanging out in one of the many grill restaurants and stuffing yourself silly to fill in a bit of time, but hang on to your wallet and mobile.
