About Ternopol

Ternopil (aka Tarnopol) sits on the Seret River in the western area of Ukraine in the historical region of Galicia and Podolia. A railway junction and highway hub connecting it to Western Europe, its economy is based on machinery, consumer goods, building materials and porcelain. It sounds like a fairytale when it is said the city was founded by "the princes of Galicia" as a castle and a fortified town in 1540. Its history is somewhat messy having had a stint with Austria, Poland and the Ukraine, with the Tatars and Turks devastating the city no less than 14 times between the years 1544-1698. The railway appeared in 1870 and the Ukrainian Grammar School opened its doors in 1898. Destroyed during World War II, the city has been restored and is now a vibrant student city where you will find many universities and specialized secondary educational institutions. The locals consist of a mixture of Poles, Germans, Russians and Ukrainians.

You can make your way around town by trolleybuses or public bus, but be warned foreigners do find it hard to navigate this city, due to the lack of signage and the language barrier. Make sure you check out the Museum of Regional Art and jump on board a boat to take a trip across Ternopil Lake. In the town you will find a couple of theaters to catch a show at, a philharmonic hall, art galleries and libraries to while away some time. Make sure you take a stroll around the Theatrical Square and the lush parklands of Shevchenko, where local political meetings take place. Of course there is a puppet theater and plenty of churches to say a few prayers at.

There is no shortage of home brewed beer to quench your thirst and plenty of borsch to slurp down.
