About Kharkov

Yes you can spell it 2 ways:  Kharkov or Kharkiv.  Over run by some 150,000 students, there are 13 national universities with a plethora of nationalities present forging frontiers in the fields of aerospace, medicine and cryology.  With a significant history from the Russian Empire era to World War II when the Germans twice occupied it, it was eventually freed in 1943. It is not over run by tourists and the locals are extremely friendly.  The town is perfect for long meandering walks or a bit of pedal pushing on a bike with plenty of scenic rivers and national parks to explore.

Make sure you give the kids a nod of approval at the Children's Railway where it is managed and run by "children", head to the Shevchenko Park for a slow deep breath of fresh air where you can people watch until your heart's content, or step on the bronze globe which denotes the 50th Parallel that passes through 12 countries of which Kharkov is one point.  If you can't get your head around this fact, then it will at least supposedly bring you good luck.  If by some chance you have a significant other with you, or maybe a newfound best friend, head to the UNESCO Mirror Stream fountain one night to see the brilliant rainbow water stream.  You may have to dodge the newly weds and their photographic aspirations.

For the religious buffs go to the Pokrovsky Cathedral that was built in the 17th Century or the Annunciation Cathedral for a touch of Neo-Byzantine architecture, let alone the spiritual benefit.  Head to Freedom Square that is over 11,000 sqm and find the giant Derzh Prom building that was the first high-rise in the USSR.  For the lovers again, maybe even a one-night passionate stand, confess your undying love at the Monument to Lovers. If sans a current person of more than interest, ride the cable railway or kayak the Vorskia River to get rid of the pent up frustration with a huge adrenalin rush.
