About Surat Thani

A city in the Amphoe Mueang Surat Thani Province in the south of Thailand, Surat Thani sits about 651km south of the dynamic Thai capital of Bangkok. Perched near the mouth of the Tapi River on the Gulf of Thailand, Surat Thani has about 128,179 residents meandering its streets, going to a temple for prayers or heading to a coworking venue to get creative. Known as the jumping off point for tourists heading to Ko Samui, Ko Tao or Ko Pha Ngan for some island time, it's the regional commercial hub with a seaport and plenty of ferries for the tourist hordes.

The city's name means "city of good people" and it was given to the city because of the intense devotion of the locals to Buddhism, as it was previously named "Bandon" meaning "village on higher ground". It's also the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Surat Thani that looks after about 6,000 Catholics in southern Thailand. The city is easily accessible as the Surat Thani International Airport is only about 30km away from the city. This is where you will find the largest food festival in southern Thailand held annually in March, whilst the Surat Thani Vegetarian Festival is held in October each year.

Surat Thani may not be a tech hub such as Bangkok or Chiang Mai, but it does have its own intrepid tech savvy locals being spawned by its many education institutions plus numerous tech lingerers/wanderers looking for somewhere to work from. The Thais are renowned for working almost exclusively from laptops and other portable devices, so the coworking concept is the perfect fit. Coworking spaces also give the support to entrepreneurial individuals who wish to collaborate and mingle with likeminded souls.
