About Las Palmas

Argh, the gorgeous Canary Islands sitting off the northwest of Africa is where you will find the stunning capital of Gran Canaria, Las Palmas. A major port for the lazy traveling hordes of the cruise ship market, Las Palmas is made up of 2 bays and achingly beautiful beaches with coral reefs. Flamboyant performers strut their stuff in garish prancing parades to the loud cacophony of Latin music on an annual basis at the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria carnival. This is where the Spanish Civil War began when Francisco Franco and his followers plotted their strategy in 1936.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, "Vegueta" is the oldest part of town where you will find historical buildings to fascinate you and a rich culture embedded in the ambiance of cobblestoned laneways from the late 1400s where fishermen and immigrants carried on their daily lives. It is a bustling and cosmopolitan town where tourism reigns, Canarian wrestling is a national pass time and sailing regattas happen every weekend. Over run with cafes and restaurants, there are plenty of bars to have time out for some tapas and a couple of drinks, or shops to do some duty free shopping whilst rubbing out the numbers on your credit card.
