About Nizhny Novgorod

Tsar Peter I celebrated his 50th birthday here, it was the birthplace of Maxim Gorky (famous writer) and the city is awash in places using the name "Gorky" from bars to companies. This is where the boatmen of the Volga River are known to give impromptu renditions of the song "Oh, Dubinushka, uhnem" and there is a sculpture of "Sharp Dressers" (fashion is obviously a serious subject). It was Nizhny engineers that invented the first Soviet tank and hydrofoil boats. Colloquially shortened to "Nizhny", the city is an important cultural, transportation and economic hub of Russia. Located about 400 km east of Moscow, it is where the Oka River flows into the Volga. Considered to be Russia's 3rd city after Moscow and St Petersburg, it is a hot spot for tourists due to its stunning landscape perched on cliffs that separate the Volga and Oka Rivers.

You will find hints of its Communist past when the city was closed to all foreigners and plenty of museums to poke your nose in to. Famed for its natural beauty, the best view of the city can be had whilst riding the cable car completed in 2012. It connects Nizhny to the town of Bor stretching across the Volga River; it is the perfect bird's eye view, especially at sunset. You should head to the pedestrian street of Bolshava Pokrovskaya to soak up the buzzing atmosphere of charming cafes. For the shopaholic there are boutique stores where quirky window displays appear to be de regueur and stunning architecture will surround you. This is the area to be in at night when it really comes alive and the bars are overflowing with locals and tourists alike. Do make the effort to climb over 1,500 stairs connecting the city center with the river embankment, the Chkalov Staircase, just so you can say you did it. If you are in need of a bit of culture there is the National Center of Contemporary Art, which is one of the most modern art galleries in the whole of Russia.
