About Maykop

Literally translated "the valley of apple trees", Maykop sits on the right bank of the Belaya River and is the capital city of the Republic of Adygea, Russia. Initially a Russian military fort swamped with Kuban Cossacks founded in 1857, the city played an important part in the Caucasus War, due to its strategic position. The Red Army ousted the Cossacks in 1920. The city is a large transport hub with 2 main universities, Adgeya State University and Maykop State Technological University, where trolleybuses rumble the streets. Believed to be one of the most beautiful cities in the Northern Caucasus region, Maykop has wide streets dressed in lush green trees, beautiful squares overflowing with cafes and a stunning public park overlooking the Belaya River.

Internationally known for its archaeological excavations in the late 19th Century when precious vessels of the Bronze Age were found, today these items are displayed in the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg. The Drouzhba (Friendship) Square is the place to hang out in for rubbing shoulders with the locals and imbibing in some local fare. Sitting in the outskirts of the city is a memorial marking the mass grave of the Red Army soldiers who died in 1918 and the soldiers who were killed in 1942. The recreation area along the Belaya River is perfect to take an afternoon stroll or to simply veg out under a tree, but if you want some serious outdoor activity, then you should head to the Belaya River Canyon or the Caucasian State Reserve.
