About Kaluga

Founded in the mid 14th Century, Kaluga sits on the Oka River, 93 miles southwest of Moscow. This is the car-birthing haven of Volkswagen, Volvo, Citroen and Mitsubishi, making the city one of the main centers of the Russian automotive industry. Since 2007 its economy has been firmly entrenched in the car industry. The world's second largest automotive glass manufacturer, China's Fuyao Glass Industry Group, has set up home here and Continental car tires roll out of the city as well. Touted as being a small friendly town with quite a few expatriates, due to the automobile industry, Kaluga is a city on the verge of growing up with a strong Moscow style middle-class in the making.

Densely draped in its historical culture there are over 4000 monuments including mansions, monasteries and 28 museums to poke around in. There is also an overwhelming 480 libraries, for those that like to bury their noses in books. Cafes and restaurants are recently springing up due to the influx of foreign investment in the automobile industry. The Konstantin E Tsiolkovsky State Museum of the History of Cosmonautics is in tribute to Konstantic Tsiolovsky the famous space pioneer, eccentric recluse and former Kaluga resident, who developed many of the key principles of rocket science. You can stroll around the old town planned by Catherine the Great and some local architects of the time and amble over stone bridges to check out the Central City Park of Culture and Recreation.

If you want to venture further afield, then hire a car and head to the Ugra National Park for some trekking or wildlife spotting. Here you can stalk, photograph or chat to the animals, but do not shoot them.
